Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory & Accounting
Measure, manage, and master your carbon footprint.
Accurate greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting is the bedrock of any credible corporate sustainability strategy. Greenhouse gas emissions reporting means measuring the greenhouse gases your business produces and disclosing them in a standard format, usually following the GHG Protocol. Requests often come from large customers checking their supply chain, from lenders and investors, from RFPs, and more and more from regulators. We handle the whole process: collecting the data, doing the calculations, and preparing a report you can share.
Understanding Scope 1, 2, and 3 Emissions
To build a complete picture of your environmental impact, emissions are categorized into three distinct scopes:
- Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources you own or control, like company vehicles, furnaces, and on-site fuel use.
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the electricity, heating, or cooling that you buy.
- Scope 3: All other indirect emissions in your value chain, like purchased goods, shipping, business travel, employee commuting, and how customers use your products.
Most businesses start with Scopes 1 and 2, then add the most relevant Scope 3 categories.
Why Hire a CPA for Sustainability Reporting?
Sustainability data is now held to the same standard as financial data. As a CPA with an audit background, we build your emissions and ESG data with clear sources, documented calculations, and proper controls. Your numbers hold up to customer reviews, lender due diligence, and third-party assurance, with fewer corrections later. Furthermore, many customers accept an unverified report in the first year, but third-party assurance is increasingly expected by investors, lenders, and large customers to add credibility to public claims. We prepare your data to be assurance-ready from the start and can help you select and work with an assurance provider.
What to Expect: Process & Data Needed
We keep the process streamlined to minimize disruption to your daily operations:
- For Scope 1 and 2: We typically need 12 months of utility bills (electricity, natural gas, and heating), fuel records for company vehicles and equipment, and a list of your facilities. A first Scope 1 and 2 inventory usually takes about 4 weeks, depending mostly on how fast your energy and fuel data can be collected.
- For Scope 3: We may also need spending by supplier category, shipping records, and business travel data. Scope 3 typically extends the timeline to 8 weeks in total.
We provide a simple checklist and template to make collection quick, and most of the work is handled completely on our side.
